ABOUT
BIOGRAPHY
Some say Thigma are unique because they make ultra forward-thinking metal while living on an idyllic little island that's caught in the past. Others say Thigma are unique because they're a young band overflowing with energy, but all their members were born in the early to mid '70s. And then others say Thigma are unique because their singer lives 7632km away, and not because he doesn't like them! Some even say Thigma are unique because they have a female bassist, who also happens to be married to the drummer. Yes, all of these facts are certainly unique, but focusing on any of them does a grave injustice to the band's true uniqueness: their music!
Thigma power their pioneering metal with an authentic analogue attitude, which the members developed while paying their dues in other bands during the '90s and '00s. A refreshing antithesis to the Pro Tools sterility of most modern music, Thigma is driven by their overwhelming need to learn, improve, and play/write better than they did yesterday.
In fact, it was this very passion for self-improvement that gave birth to the band, when strangers Dan McDonough (guitarist in '90s Vancouver band, Boxcutter) and guitarist Ryan James(former member) both ended up taking music lessons from Ray Harmony (Revolution Harmony). Ray, seeing himself as a sort of "band matchmaker" after successfully conceiving bands like Exist Immortal, decided that Dan and Ryan were destined to tour together. He introduced the two guitarists, who instantly felt a connection, and within a month were in Ray's studio writing and recording their debut double A-side single Cultivate (2015). Lacking a full band, Ray turned to his good friend Meyrick de la Fuente (Exist Immortal) for session vocals, but after falling in love with their songs, Meyrick became the band's long-distance singer.
In early 2016, Dan crossed island paths with surfers Jette Leimbigler (bass) and Malcolm Shoolbraid (drums), a mega-rare married rhythm section. Malcolm, who's been touring the world in Scrap Arts Music since '99, took one listen to Thigma's polymetric patterns, and wanted in. So, one chat around the campfire later, and Thigma had a complete line-up.
Following countless rehearsals through the spring, in the summer Thigma returned to Revolution Harmony studios (Vancouver, BC) to start work on their debut album, with production by Ray Harmony. Their highly-anticipated Thigma LP will be out worldwide in 2020, but in the meantime, you can download lead single The Resonance for free!
